NIGERIA – Copyright Commission: Anti-piracy campaign

18/05/2023

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has taken a hard line against infringement of literary works by enforcing harsher penalties as part of its national anti-piracy campaign. Mr John Asien, the NCC Director-General, addressed the need to increase enforcement, as well as having the necessary mechanisms in place to ensure the protection of copyright, during a statement he made on Sunday 23 April 2023, commemorating World Book and Copyright Day.

Mr Asien pointed out that the new Copyright Act of 2022 would improve author’s rights and address the challenges faced of digital transmission of literary and other works, as well the exploitation of protected works on digital platforms.

Mr Asien stated that the NCC is “working with various stakeholders and relevant agencies and has commenced a series of public education and enlightenment campaigns as a prelude to the full-scale national anti-piracy drive”. He further cautioned that, with the stiffer penalties available in the new Act for criminal infractions, the public is advised to refrain from all forms of copyright infringement.
